Arenal: Tour Descriptions

All weekday and weekend tours rotate every 4 weeks. Special weekend tours are often scheduled by our activities director to take advantage of unique tour opportunities. These special tours are in addition to our regularly scheduled tours.

Arenal Volcano Tour | Danaus Center | Malekaus Indiginous | Hot Springs | Rio Toro Rafting
Venado Caverns | Arenal Lake Kayaking | Canopy Tour and Horseback Riding

TUESDAY TOURS:

Arenal Volcano Tour Departure: 2:30 p.m. at school
Drop off: 6:30 p.m. at school

Hiking tour:
Takes 20 minutes from the school to the Arenal Volcano National Park. The guide starts the tour giving a brief description of the area. There are different trails and the most interesting one is the old lava flows trail, where students can appreciate the vestiges of last eruptions. At almost sunset time, we walk into the primary and secondary forest trails to watch several animals of the area, such as: toucans, guams, white nose coatis, parrots, and more. Returning from the park, around 6:00, we stop in a special view point to admire the lava flowing from the volcano.

Danaus Center Departure: 1:30 p.m. at school
Drop off: 4:00 p.m. at school

It is a very special environment investigation center. They offer to the visitors: a butterfly garden of native species, a serpentarium, a lake with crocodiles, several trails where people can watch birds of the area, and a nursery specialized in trees of reforestation.


What is included?
Tranportation, entrances and bilingual guide.

What to bring? Hiking shoes, t-shirt, long pants, water bottle, poncho, mosquito repellent (extremely necessary), camera.


Malekus Indigenous Departure: 1:30 p.m. at school
Drop off: 4:00 p.m. at school

Takes just 20 minutes to get to Finca La Casona, place located in a mountain with a nice view of La Fortuna. It used to be the ranch of an ex-president of Costa Rica. In that place Malekus aborigines present their culture, by means of dances, songs and sample of crafts. Most of the time, the tourist shares with them dances and some natives rituals.
The students can learn how farmers work and the importance of the cattle in the area of
San Carlos.

What to bring? No specialized equipment necessary.


Hot Springs Departure: 3:00 p.m. at school
Drop off: 6:30 p.m. at school

Before enjoying the warm water of the river, we take a short walk around the beautiful forest of the area. The volcano hot springs contains minerals and some other elements - helpers of relaxation and skin health. A welcome drink is offer to students and the restaurant and bar service is available during the afternoon.

What is included?
Transportation, entrances, welcome drink and guide.

What to bring? Hiking shoes, t-shirt, short pants, swimming suit, towel and extra clothes to change into after the tour, sun block, mosquito repellent.

SATURDAY TOURS:

Rio Toro Rafting Departure: 8:00 a.m.
Drop off: 2:00 p.m.


Rio Toro is a pristine water river located one hour away from La Fortuna. This is a class 2 and 3 rapids river, so any experience is required. Birds and some mamals are easy to see on the border of the river. We enjoy the lunch in a beach river in the middle of the tour.

What is included?
Transportation, lunch, specialized equipment and guide.

What to bring? T-shirt, short pants (no jeans), sandals (Teva style), swimming suit, sunglasses, sun block, towel and extra clothe to change into after the tour.


Venado Caverns Departure: 8:00 a.m.
Drop off: 2:00 p.m.


The place is located just 45 minutes from La Fortuna. The cavern contains configurations over 6 million years old and bear the beauty of waterfalls and numerous stalactites and stalagmites. Several insects and four different species of bats can be watched under ground. The company brings all the equipment necessary for the activity and is important to follow the security rules.

What to bring? Hiking shoes, t-shirt, long pants (no jeans), mosquito repellent, towel and extra clothe to change into after the tour.


Arenal Lake Kayaking Departure: 8:00 a.m.
Drop off: 2:00 p.m.


This is the biggest man made lake in the country. Costarican Electricity Company made the Dam Lake to export electricity to Central America. At the same time, tourism has many benefits from this lake: windsurfing, kayaking, float trips and sport fishing are just some activities in this place. On the trip the students will paddle with an expert guide around some islands and watch birds native to the area.

What is included?
Transportation, lunch, seat on top kayaks, specialized equipment and guide.

What to bring? Swimming suit, sun block, hat, sunglasses, sun block, towel and extra clothes to change into after the tour.


Canopy Tour and Horseback Riding Departure: 8:00 a.m.
Drop off: 2:00 p.m.


The adventure begins when you arrive at the stables and the guides give you an idea of your tour, then you get part of your equipment and you horseback ride for approximately 45 minutes. When we arrive at our destination, we give you the rest of the necessary equipment. We continue with a short walk through the transitional forest where a guide points out things that prevail in the rain forest. Some times it is possible to see several species of animals, such as white faced and howler monkey, rodents, snakes and a great diversity of birds.
