What
People Are Saying
About Our Nursing Spanish Program:
“The [Nursing Spanish Program at AEC] not only gave me the
foundation for learning the language, but most of all, I gained
friendship with the "AEC family".”

BRN)
PROGRAM OVERVIEW
Nurses can earn 37 category 1 contact hours per week. Courses
run every week of the year.
Effective communication is the key to providing patients with
quality healthcare. With Spanish being the second most common
language spoken in the United States behind English, it is
increasingly important for healthcare providers to offer their
services in Spanish. With this fact in mind AEC of Costa Rica
has designed a special, nurse-specific
Spanish program. This ANCC approved program has been carefully
tailored to meet the needs of nurses who work with Spanish-speaking
patients and their families.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
This program will give nurses the ability to converse with
Spanish speaking patients in a hospital or clinic environment.
The program's goals is to develop or improve a nurse's Spanish
language abilities in the workplace. Students enrolled in
the Nursing Spanish Program in
Arenal will learn standard Spanish in 4 hour morning classes
each day. They will be placed in one of nine different levels
based on their individual Spanish proficiency. The students
will then join in on the 2 hour afternoon classes and medical
visitations that have been designed to accommodate all levels
of Spanish ability, and focus on medical Spanish terminology
and Spanish speaking communication skills.
“I came to AEC barely able to speak
Spanish and now after three weeks in Costa Rica I can communicate
with my Spanish speaking patients. I had a amazing experience
and I hope that I can do so again. I recommend this program
to any nurse who is interested in learning Spanish.”

University
The
class time is supplemented with the addition of medical site
visitations to local Costa Rican clinics and hospitals. During
these visitations, under the supervision of our in house nurse/preceptor,
students will accompany nurses to local hospitals and clinics.
Evening talks are also scheduled once a week with our nursing
preceptor and other local nurses where specific areas of interest
to individual students can be discussed.
